What an interesting clock these Congreve clocks are and really mesmeric: a real time waster as you cannot help but just stand, or sit, and watch the thing perform. This particular clock has the feel of its being built from a kit but'engineer finished' to a really high standard with the pinions and arbors being hardened & polished and the general feel is that of finess with care and attention to detail being the order of the day.A serial number of 2544 is found on the underside edge of the rear frame plate. It appears that the whole thing is gold plated to add to the overall effect and extraordianry finish of this timepiece. The movement of the clock has been. Stripped, cleaned, and overhauled and the pivots have been polished along with a replaced mainspring as the one fitted was'tired' and also replaced is the galvanised steel wire with a more robust and, IMHO, in keeping bronze wire by a time served qualified clockmaker of 38 years experience.
The clock has been adjusted for level, the table has been trued to absolute flat and balanced (a very important aspect to ensure Congreve clocks work as they should) and the trigger arms and escapement set to tolerance. It is a well known fact that these clocks are known for being poor time keepers owing to friction interference etc. I have it, at todays date, at loosing seven minutes in 107 hours so pretty good by all accounts. Adjustment is possible to get it to be a little more accurate however patience is the order of the day!
With three enamel subsidery dials, housed in engine turned bezels, for hours, minutes and thirty seconds are complemented by blued steel'Trefoil' hands and really are in great condition. All in all a super example of an unusual clock working well and a real time waster when it comes to watching a mechanical item perform. There is a video available an Youtube where the clock can be seen working, as it should, and it is slightly out of level but is working!!!!
The clock is mounted on an attractive and polished tiered gold veined black marble base with adjustable levelling feet that compliments the clock and is very very heavy at maybe 25kgs. Sizes as follows: clock under shade is 17 1/2 " x 18 1/4". The clock on its own is 16" tall by 12 1/2" wide and deep. Any questions ask away and happy to help.
